With the Reprise acquisition, Warner gained the services of Mo Ostin, who was mainly responsible for the success of Warner/Reprise. In 1963, Warner purchased Reprise Records, which had been founded by Frank Sinatra three years earlier so that he could have more creative control over his recordings. Artists can do a lot for themselves, but if they want major success they’re probably going to have to tap label services. But, if I believe in an act, I don’t mind that risk. The risk… If you sign an act, spend money and fail, you could lose your job. And that might take a little while to determine. So, you want to be sure you can make a long-term commitment. Working with an artist is like forming a partnership, or entering a marriage. Is there a courting period before signing? I’ll let an artist simply be “the artist” if they’re crazy with talent. You know, some artists are a little crazy, but that doesn’t bother me as long as we get results. If I believe there’s potential, I’ll work with almost any artist. Is there anything that would stop you from working with an artist? I look at the whole package, the music, the talent and the image. I like things that are original and stand out. For those who love the exploits of Mr Wick, here are five other films they should seek out. There’s a persuasive argument to be made that John Wick: Chapter 3, Mission Impossible: Fallout and Mad Max: Fury Road form a trilogy of perfect Hollywood action masterpieces – movies which may even rival Asia’s sterling work in the genre. ![]() The whole shebang culminates in a visceral over-extended last stand in which more mirrors are broken than in any film ever, one which leaves viewers feeling as beaten and exhausted as its titular character. Wick then follows this by killing his hunters by utilising all the artifacts of a weapons museum, a horse, a pack of vicious dogs trained by Halle Berry and special bullets which pierce kevlar vests. In the opening ten minutes, Reeves’ assassin murders a 7ft man with a book. The recently released John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum delivered on its predecessor’s finale, with a more bone-crunchingly brutal entry to the franchise. With a massive bounty on his head, it ended with our anti-hero getting ready to fight his way out of a New York where everyone wants him dead. ![]() ![]() It saw Keanu Reeves’ titular character – a legendary retired assassin forced back into the game – get excommunicado(ed?), John Wick lingo for being blacklisted from all the protection his crime world offered. Obsidian occurs only where geologic processes create volcanoes and where the chemical composition of the magma is rich in silica. In comparison, quartz (crystallized silicon dioxide) has a hardness of 7.0. Obsidian is relatively soft with a typical hardness of 5 to 5.5 on the mineral hardness scale. Because obsidian is not comprised of mineral crystals, technically obsidian is not a true "rock." It is really a congealed liquid with minor amounts of microscopic mineral crystals and rock impurities. It is chemically similar to granite and rhyolite, which also were originally molten. Obsidian consists of about 70 percent or more non-crystallized silica (silicon dioxide). This had obvious advantages for our Stone Age ancestors, who used obsidian extensively for tool making. The intersections of conchoidal fracture surfaces can be sharper than a razor. This smooth, curved type of fracture surface occurs because of the near-absence of mineral crystals in the glass. Like all glass and some other types of naturally occurring rocks, obsidian breaks with a characteristic "conchoidal" fracture. These relatively large mineral crystals (easily visible to the naked eye) give granite a rough fracture surface. Granite is composed entirely of intergrown crystals of quartz, feldspar, mica and other minerals. Crystal faces form only where there is enough open space in the rock mass to allow the natural geometric forms of the crystals to develop as free faces. ![]() When crystallization occurs, the atoms that comprise a mineral become arranged in regular, geometric patterns that are unique to the specific mineral. All rocks consist of mixtures of various crystalline minerals. When I say "crystals," don't visualize those beautiful pointed prisms of quartz found in geodes. This volcanic glass has an almost total absence of sizable mineral crystals within the glass matrix. Obsidian is natural glass that was originally molten magma associated with a volcano. My goal in this article is to increase your awareness of some of the more fascinating aspects of this incredible stone. ![]() The ancient volcanic hills called Glass Buttes hold a dazzling variety of gem-quality obsidian, including: mahogany, red, flame, midnight lace, jet black, pumpkin, brown, rainbow, gold sheen, silver sheen, green, lizard skin, snowflake and more. But until a few years ago when I made my first obsidian collecting trip to Glass Buttes, Oregon, I thought obsidian was pretty much just black glass. Sharp and shiny, obsidian is so different from other rocks. Ever since I had my first rock collection as a child, I've loved obsidian. ![]() The boas for sale are guaranteed eating, sexed correctly, and healthy. Our prices are low, and our snakes beautiful. ![]() So perhaps cinema was more preoccupied with ideas of hell and apocalypse as a result. ![]() Side note: Event Horizon and Se7en arrived at the end of the millennium, and were accompanied by media-driven fears of digital meltdown ( the Y2K bug). This is a preview of the bad place, yet several of the rescue crew experience it for real while trapped in their floating hell. It appears to show them literally in hell (or driven mad by their experience of it), where they kill each other in horrendous ways.Īt the end of the film, the demented Dr Weir shows Miller what hell looks like with a montage of grotesque shots. The first glimpse of this comes from the recovered video of the missing crew. ![]() The film’s ultra stylized vision of hell relies on medieval imagery of broken, perverse bodies and the torments of hell. See also the role of the librarian or knowledge-keeper in Rosemary’s Baby, Se7en and WarGames. Latin may be a dead language yet someone aboard a spaceship in 2040 happens to speaks it ( kind of, though the mistranslation is a key plot point). There’s the naming of the two ships, for starters.Ĭaptains Lewis and Clark mapped the American west in the 1800s, while event horizon – a term coined in the 1950s – describes the way black holes work. This isn’t the only way the film loops around to connect the space age with the olden days. This means that while religion and spirituality is missing from both the Event Horizon and rescue vessel Lewis and Clark, the film is nonetheless rife with the dread of hell. But as later films including The Devil’s Advocate, Se7en and Constantine show, modernity remains fascinated by medieval concepts of good and evil. In Rosemary’s Baby (1968) fresh fears about the death of God and religion create a gateway that brings Satan into contemporary society. Outer space becomes a metaphor for inner space (the soul) and the eternal black hole of hell What’s intriguing about Event Horizon is that the film transplants our age-old preoccupation with hell into the secular, almost sterile space age. The ship performs a similar function as the ouija board in The Exorcist (1973) in that both reveal hidden doors, then serve up devilish consequences for opening them. The big reveal in 1997’s Event Horizon is that the eponymous ship hasn’t just been bending space-time – it has opened a gateway to hell itself. Reading past this point will open a portal into the hellish reaches of outer and inner space, probably. This article explores sci-fi horror Event Horizon – with spoilers. The rescuers discover the ship uses black holes to move through wormholes in space, but when they find a recording of the crew’s final moments they realise it has become capable of something far worse. What is Event Horizon about?Ī deep space vessel is sent to rescue the Event Horizon, a ship that vanished somewhere beyond Neptune in 2040. Known for its flashes of grotesque violence, s ci-fi horror film Event Horizon tells a broader story about our fascination with hell and poor choices. |
